What’s new?

What’s new?

We converged!

Two of our members attended the National Fossil Free Convergence in Katoomba on 10-13 March. The weekend was jam-packed with training sessions, networking opportunities and empowering vibes!

  • 101 dedicated students, staff, and alumni from all over Australia (and five from New Zealand!) attended the event.
  • We skilled up in community organising, research and action planning.
  • We were welcomed as a newly kickstarted campaign along with Fossil Free ACU (Australian Catholic University).

We loved it! We’ll be using what we learnt when planning our campaign back at USC, and making the most of the new relationships we built with other uni groups.

What now?

We’re meeting with the University Chief Operating Officer this week to discuss divestment.

We’ve already been told that USC does not directly invest in companies associated with fossil fuel, that the majority of USC’s investments are held with the Queensland Treasury Corporation (QTC), and that the remainder is held with the four large banks in Australia. But we remain unconvinced, and suspect that USC is investing indirectly in the fossil fuel sector via QTC’s benchmark bonds.

We need more details. We’ll be asking for more transparency regarding USC’s investments and a commitment that the University will investigate ways to divest and/or make a public commitment not to invest in fossil fuels in future.

What about you?

You can support Fossil Free USC in a number of ways:

  1. Sign and share our petition. We need numbers to show that students, staff, alumni and members of the community want a fossil free uni!
  2.  Join the team and come with us to Brisbane on Sunday 9 April for campaign training, organised and facilitated by 350.org.
  3. Let us know if you want to get involved in any other way.

What next?

  • We’re still planning to hold an information session on campus to raise awareness about our campaign and build our USC network. We’re hoping to schedule it before the end of April, so stay tuned for more details soon!
  • We’ll be taking part in the Global Divestment Mobilisation early May. Again, more details coming soon but you can register your interest here in the meantime.
